Embracing Sustainability at Witzob
At Witzob, we believe that every choice we make impacts the world around us. You’re either part of the solution or part of the problem—and we’re committed to being part of the solution.
Our Santa Elena base camp is completely off the grid, meticulously designed to be self-sustaining while harmonizing with the natural environment. We’ve integrated innovative elements like tunnel systems to allow reptiles and small mammals to move freely across the property without disturbing or being disturbed by our guests. These tunnels provide a private and safe passage for wildlife, ensuring that we share the space respectfully with the creatures that call it home.
One of the highlights of our eco-friendly setup is our aqua garden. Not only does it provide a reliable source of clean drinking water, but it also serves as a vital oasis for various wildlife, especially during the dry months. Expect to see an array of lizards, birds, and frogs—lots of frogs. Our frog population is particularly unique; unlike their noisy North American counterparts, these frogs are silent and impressive in size. You might spot one as large as a dinner plate, busy keeping our ecosystem in balance by feasting on bugs.
We’ve also created a habitat to encourage dragonfly reproduction, which plays a crucial role in controlling the mosquito and fly populations. Thanks to our dragonflies and the town’s efforts to spray, mosquitoes are virtually a non-issue at Witzob Glamping Adventures.
Our approach to integrating nature extends to our campsites as well. The Tree Fort, for instance, is built around three large, old-growth trees—the only trees that remained on the property before development. Two of these trees are vital food sources for the Keel-billed Toucan, Belize’s national bird. Instead of removing them, we preserved these trees, allowing guests the rare experience of waking up to toucans right overhead. The trees also provide natural shade, keeping the unit cool with the help of a simple fan.
Our commitment to sustainability includes incorporating as many food-producing plants as possible. On the property, you’ll find organically grown lemons, limes, dragon fruit, oranges, tangerines, pomegranates, coconuts, mulberries, grapefruits, cherries, avocados, soursop, star fruit, passion fruit, bananas, and more. These are all available to our guests during harvest season.
In a time of climate crisis, fostering a sustainable biodiversity is crucial. At Witzob Glamping Adventures, we’re doing everything we can to support the natural world and be part of the solution, not the problem. We invite you to join us in this mission, experiencing the beauty of Belize while treading lightly on the earth.
